Hard work pays off for M-S singers, musicians

MAHOMET — Music just happens to run in Ella Herriott's family. That tradition was one her grandmother, Barbara Herriott of Seymour, was elated to see on display during the Feb. 28 seventh- and eighth-graders' band and chorus concert.

"We've got a lot of music in our family," Barbara Herriott said.

"(It's) been one of the most gratifying and fulfilling experiences," Ledin said. "I've always loved comedy, and I want to be a stand-up comedian when I'm out of college."

A standing-room-only pops concert last May to bid farewell to beloved choral instructor Jill Rinkel was quite the introduction for Mahomet-Seymour Junior High's newest choral instructor, Brian Lonergan.

"It was packed the whole way up," Lonergan said. "That was pretty special."

Two years ago, Jolene Sowers wanted to know what the Sangamon River Music Festival was all about, but the Tilton resident had no idea just how much that inquiry was about to mean to her.

"My husband (Todd Sowers) proposed to me here two years ago tomorrow," she said.

Now renamed the Mahomet Music Festival, the couple still "make it a point" to come back.

Hundreds of community members gathered at Barber Park last Friday for one sole purpose — celebrating Mahomet.

Mahomet Parks and Recreation kicked off its Summer Concert Series with acts such as the Caleb Cook Band and Mike Ingram and provided goodies from local food truck vendors, including Chester's BBQ, Kona Ice, the Snack Shack and TK's Cheesesteaks.
