

A date has been set for the opening of Mahomet's new drop-off site for yard waste.
It'll be open to Village of Mahomet residents only on Saturday, Aug. 15, from 8 a.m. to noon at the public works facility on Lake of the Woods Road. Residents dropping off brush and limbs will be asked to show a photo ID that includes their address.
For hundreds of years, a huge burr oak stood on what is now the east side of Mahomet, near the site of the historic Nine Gal Tavern.
“It was huge,” Jane Stubblefield, who owns the adjacent property with her husband Dennis. “Everybody called it the Lincoln Tree.”
The Champaign County Forest Preserve District will again accept used Christmas trees to be recycled after the holiday season.
Trees may be dropped off at three forest preserve locations in the county through January 18.
Forest preserve staff use the trees to create habitats for fish in lakes around Champaign County. They’re also mulched for landscaping use.

If your Christmas tree is dropping brown needles on the carpet, now might be a good time to make it “green” again by donating it for resuse.
As in past years, Champaign County Forest Preserve District is accepting used Christmas trees for recycling.
The Village of Mahomet is scheduling a special brush collection to deal with the aftermath of the severe thunderstorms on June 25.
Streets and Maintenance Superintendent Eric Crowley, whose staff was busy cleaning up felled trees and other damage on Wednesday, said that the special collection will start the week of July 8.
