Courtney Porter is the assistant principal at Lincoln Trail Elementary School. She holds two bachelor's degrees from Illinois State University, one in criminal justice and the other in education, and will soon hold two master's degrees from the University of Illinois in education and social work.

Pauline Jones

MAHOMET — Pauline (Brown) Jones, 92, of Mahomet passed away on Saturday (Jan. 6, 2018) at the Farmer City Nursing Home.

She was born May 27, 1925, in Champaign, the daughter of George A. and Gertrude (Bell) Brown. She was a 1943 graduate of Mahomet High School. Pauline married Harold "Jonsey" Jones on May 10, 1946.

Despite playing four Class 4A schools — including the No. 1-seeded team and two coaches who have won state titles — the No. 9-seeded Mahomet-Seymour boys' basketball team placed sixth in the 39th State Farm Holiday Classic tournament last week.

But now, with two separate 3- to 4-inch snow events on Dec. 24 and Dec. 29, and temperatures dropping well below zero, the village's transportation superintendent Eric Crowley is left with a well-worked, seven-member crew.

Martha Beck

FARMER CITY — Martha Mae Beck, 86, of Farmer City passed away at 8:17 p.m. Wednesday (Dec. 20, 2017) at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana.

A private family graveside memorial service will be held in Maple Grove Cemetery, Farmer City, at a later date.

Memorials may be made to the Farmer City Food Pantry.


Museum of the Grand Prairie hosting New Year's Eve celebration

Kicking off the New Year with a balloon drop and a countdown to noon, the Museum of the Grand Prairie invites Champaign County residents to party like it is 1900. From 10:30 a.m. to noon Sunday, the museum's free New Year's Eve celebration will feature crafts, games and snacks for youths ages preschool to teens.


A year in review: Mahomet's top 10 stories of 2017

In a year, so much can change in your neck of the woods. Last January, the village's special census of 11 subdivisions added 1,142 new residents since the 2010 census, which brought Mahomet's total population within the village to 8,400. Aside from population growth, Mahomet's commercial businesses grew in size with 11 new businesses (and more on the way).
