

A new sports season is just around the corner, but before that, The Mahomet Citizen wanted to pay tribute to last year's teams. It's time for an end-of-the-year wrapup.
Last sports season, by any measurement, the Mahomet-Seymour High School had many highlights. Here's an alphabetical look, by sport.
Baseball
Another day, another accolade for Brooks Coetzee. The Mahomet-Seymour baseball star was named first team All-Area by The News-Gazette, first team all-conference by the Apollo Conference and first team All-State by Prep Baseball Report.
To top it off, Coetzee was also a Class 3A All-State selection by the Illinois High School Baseball Coaches Association.
The Mahomet-Seymour baseball team is on a roll heading into next Thursday's Champaign Central Class 3A Regional.
The Bulldogs have won seven straight games, including five this week against Bloomington, Charleston (twice), Argenta-Oreana and Tri-Valley.
The Mahomet-Seymour baseball team extended its season-opening winning streak to four games this past week.
The Bulldogs overpowered Clinton last Wednesday and Urbana last Friday, both in five-inning games.

July marks the official end of the 2016-17 sports season, which means it’s time for the annual end-of-the-year wrapup.
During the last sports season, by any measurement, Mahomet-Seymour High School had many highlights, as well as two heart-wrenching lows.

In Jack Rettig’s first year as a baseball redshirt for Illinois State University, the 2015 Mahomet-Seymour graduate was not happy with his development as a pitcher and decided to transfer.
That decision paid off big-time.

On Friday, the Bulldogs will learn whether they are the outright recipients of the final Corn Belt Conference baseball title or whether they have to share it.
Scenarios are taking place in baseball this spring that high school coaches never had to deal with in the past.
Imagine a pitcher throwing well and trying to protect a two-run lead late in a game. He strikes out a batter and then the coach comes out to the mound and removes him.
Mahomet-Seymour coach Nic DiFilippo doesn’t have to use his imagination.

The Mahomet-Seymour baseball team finished the week 1-2 with a win against Olympia last Tuesday but double-header losses to Rochester on Saturday.
