M-S boys' soccer victorious over Champaign Central and Charleston

Outstanding performances from Ethan Mansfield and Austin Carr helped Mahomet-Seymour boys' soccer team notch two huge victories.

The 2-1 victory over Charleston was key for the Bulldogs' Apollo Conference championship hopes. Then, the Bulldogs pulled off their biggest win of the season, beating archrival Champaign Central 3-1 on Saturday.

M-S 3, Champaign Central 1. Have a day, Carr. In the biggest game of the year against the No. 3-ranked team in the state, the M-S senior stepped up with a huge hat trick, carrying M-S to its 3-1 win.

Carr had a pair of goals in the first half, giving M-S a 2-0 lead. Joah Moore and Mansfield both set up Carr's first-half goals.

Central responded with a goal late in the first half, but Carr wouldn't be denied. He took a pass from Kadyn Jones and blasted it into the back of the net, giving M-S a game-clinching 3-1 advantage.

"Great win for the team, unfortunately, it was three days after postseason assignments were made," M-S head coach Jeremy Davis said. "Central has the top seed, Mattoon second, and we are third.

"Still excited for the boys to play well against such high-level competition."

It was also a revenge game, as Central had walloped Mahomet-Seymour 5-1 early in the season, and the Bulldogs got standout performances from their defensemen.

"Marc Majeres continued a fantastic season anchoring the back line," Davis said. "Meanwhile, Joah Moore, Ethan Mansfield and Colton Brunner played great in the midfield to play the ball forward quickly in transition to create opportunities for the offense.

"Austin Carr took advantage of those opportunities. He had his best performance of the year against the best competition of the year."

M-S improved to 11-2-4 with the win. The Bulldogs finished the month of September with an 8-1-2 record, which has put them in position to secure an Apollo Conference title.

The Bulldogs are 5-0-2 in Apollo Conference play.

M-S 2, Charleston 1. Mansfield scored one goal and dished out one assist as M-S edged Charleston. Carr tallied the other goal, while Moore had one assist.

The M-S junior varsity team blanked Charleston 2-0.

Looking ahead

The Bulldogs will play Lincoln at 11 a.m. Saturday on Senior Day at Middletown Field. Road matches with Effingham (Tuesday) and Taylorville (Thursday) are also on the docket, and there are championship implications.

"Next week will be huge for us in the conference," Davis said. "We currently sit second with two ties. We are in a position where we will need to win out in conference to have a likely chance at the title."
