M-S baseball earns share of Corn Belt Conference title

On Friday, the Bulldogs will learn whether they are the outright recipients of the final Corn Belt Conference baseball title or whether they have to share it.

Mahomet-Seymour assured itself of no worse than a tie for first by virtue of Monday’s 5-4 eight-inning triumph over visiting Chillicothe IVC.

IVC faces Normal University High on Friday with the Pioneers needing a win to share first place with M-S.

Coach Nic DiFilippo’s team is 18-10 overall and finished 10-2 in conference contests.

In other games last week, M-S topped Bloomington Central Catholic, 6-2, and lost to Normal University High, 4-1.

Against IVC, Mahomet-Seymour came out with the extra-inning, walk-off win in a back-and-forth game at home.

M-S’ defense played eight innings of errorless ball.

Tanner Kirts earned the win. He pitched one inning in relief of Bradley Hamilton.

Hamilton pitched seven innings, surrendering four runs and nine hits while striking out seven.

Brooks Coetzee homered and had two walks. Teammate Austin Biehl doubled.

Coetzee also scored three times and had one RBI.

Hamilton, Dylan Gates, Nick Herrmann and Dawson Finch each had one hit.

Finch drove in two runs. Jordan Veldman and Herrmann each scored a run.

Each team scored a run in the second inning.

The Bulldogs scored a run in the third to take the 2-1 lead.

IVC answered with a run in the fifth to tie the game and added a run in the sixth to retake the lead.

M-S battled back with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and went ahead, 4-3.

The Grey Ghosts scored a run in the top of the seventh inning to create extra innings.

Lukas Graham was 3-for-4 with an RBI, and Coetzee was 2-for-4, including a triple, with two runs scored and one RBI.

Veldman and Graham each had one RBI. Hamilton, Biehl and Veldman each scored a run.

Issac Bushue picked up the win. He pitched four innings and gave up one earned run on five hits and no walks. He struck out three.

Kirts pitched three innings and gave up no earned runs on two hits. He struck out one.

M-S scored four runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 4-1 lead.

Graham was 2-for-3 and Coetzee was 1-for-3 with a run scored.

Herrmann recorded the lone RBI, but suffered the loss on the mound.

He pitched five innings and gave up four runs on six hits and one walk. He struck out three.

Kirts pitched two scoreless innings.

U-High scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a tie and take a 4-1 lead.

The Bulldogs are scheduled to host the IHSA Class 3A Regional next week.
