MAHOMET — Sangamon on Main was bustling Tuesday night as it continues to draw businesses to the renovated former school facility, with four establishments holding ribbon cuttings.
Baldwin Bytes, Her Creative Collective, Poeta Training Center and Tutor Doctor all took the big scissors and cut the large ribbon in official openings facilitated by the Mahomet Area Chamber of Commerce.
Sangamon on Main is a multi-tenant, co-working building located in downtown Mahomet. The building previously housed Sangamon Elementary School until it was sold in August 2018 to Sangamon on Main, LLC. Since that time, the new owners have been converting the vacant school into a co-working environment that is now home to more than a dozen businesses.
This business is all about technology, from fixing PC’s to data recovery.
“We build and repair computers,” said owner Adam Baldwin, whose wife, Sarah, co-owner, handles marketing and some behind-the-scenes work for Baldwin Bytes. “We do house calls. We will set up ‘smart’ devices.”
Baldwin primarily works on PC computers, and suggests that Macintosh users take advantage of Apple Care. He does work on Macs, but PC’s are his forte.
The business plans to add website design in the future. Intern Aaron Rath, 12, a student at Mahomet-Seymour Junior High, also assists at Baldwin Bytes.
Her Creative Collective
Open upstairs at Sangamon on Main, Her Creative Collective offers artwork and aims for a calming atmosphere. Classes held here include instruction for yoga and the arts.
“Her Creative Collective is a combination of creativity and wellness brought together in one space,” said owner Dana Overman, who emphasized that she wants to offer versatility in the space. “I have a number of women who are called the ‘collectives.’ They actually teach classes as well.
“I also have a small line of wellness and home products,” she noted.
“Love it here,” she said of Sangamon on Main. “The space is perfect.”
Leslie Barr offers classes in Zentangle, a meditative drawing method, at the business.
“It’s amazing. It’s so beautiful. It’s such a calming space, and just a joy to be in,” Barr said of the location at the building in downtown Mahomet.
Her Creative Collective is open for shopping and browsing from noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, and noon to 6 p.m. Friday. It can be found online at hercreativecollective.com.
Poeta Training Center
Located in the main gym at Sangamon on Main, Poeta Training Center offers wrestling and fitness programs year-round. This is Poeta’s second location; it’s based in Lake Forest. The business bills itself as central Illinois’ only year-round, high-level wrestling training center and has program options for all ages and all levels. Their coaching staff is comprised of University of Illinois wrestling team alums, including Emery Parker and Zane Richards.
Callie Skalla, a Champaign resident, manages the location and also manages the Lake Forest site.
“Team Poeta is a multitude of things,” Skalla said Tuesday. “On the weekends, we offer birthday parties, and our most popular package has bounce houses. We also have fitness classes.”
The first session for Poeta in Mahomet had more than 90 youth participating — and Skalla said she had originally hoped for at least 40.
“We over doubled my hopes and prayers,” she said. “We have over 300 in our original location, so that would be the goal for the springtime.”
At Tutor Doctor, owner Stephanie Hess has help from her husband, Tom, and multiple tutors.
“We do private, in-home, one-to-one tutoring,” Tom Hess explained. “We think a one-to-one model is the best so they get all the attention not in a group setting, different from school, different from a learning center; and that they get the full attention. It’s all individualized for that particular student so we make sure they’re learning at their level and things that are appropriate for where they’re at in their progress.
“We decided when they were redoing this facility here that it would be good to open up a space to do some educational needs for people that needed more time and additional space,” Tom Hess said. “This was a great option for us to open up ... and expand what we do for some kids here in Mahomet and even kids outside of Mahomet that come over here and work with our tutors.
“Also, we do enrichment tutoring during the summer, and test prep, and we can do practice ACT tests in here,” he added. “We can do summertime younger kid stuff in here.”
Stephanie Hess noted that Tutor Doctor is headquartered in Canada, has a presence in about 16 countries, and her local office is a franchise that covers Mahomet, Champaign-Urbana and St. Joseph areas. The office now in Sangamon on Main opened about a month ago after the business was in operation for about 2 1/2 years, Stephanie Hess added.
“We do have adults too,” she noted. “We are going to be holding a couple of parenting classes that are free here.”
