The Champaign County Forest Preserve District is already accepting used Christmas trees.
Trees may be dropped off at three forest preserve locations – Lake of the Woods Park in Mahomet, the Middle Fork River Forest Preserve in Penfield or the Homer Lake Forest Preserve – through Jan. 17.
At Lake of the Woods, you may drop trees off anytime inside the maintenance entrance off of Illinois 47. At Homer Lake, trees are being collected in the maple grove area between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m.
At the Middle Fork preserve, trees may be dropped off anytime at the maintenance building.
More information is available by calling 586-3360 or visiting www.ccfpd.org.
Trees will be used by the Forest Preserve District in one of two ways.
They will either be sunk into the lakes for fish habitat, or they will be chipped and placed around plantings throughout the District’s 3,899 acres.
