MAHOMET — The annual Mahomet-wide Spring Garage Sales are today and Saturday, and shoppers have an opportunity for purchases this year that haven’t been offered before — items up for sale with nostalgia attached to them.
“Lots of furniture, desks, chairs, bookcases from Sangamon School when it was here” will be for sale throughout the weekend, extending past the villagewide sales to Sunday, said Mary Pettenger of Winderson’s Creations, located in Sangamon on Main, 601 E. Main St.
The former Sangamon School was sold to 1000 Churchill LLC, which purchased the 3.6-acre property in November 2017, and the last school year closed out at Sangamon a year ago. Items from the building’s time serving students remain, from child-size chairs to teacher desks, metal filing cabinets, U-shaped activity tables, bookcases and student desks, too, and much more.
Prior to the weekend’s planned sale of goods ranging from chalkboards to cafeteria tables to pianos, owners of the site extended an offer to help those in need.
“We’ve had not-for-profits come in. They were all invited to come in, take anything that they needed or wanted,” Pettenger said. “And then we’ve got some homeschool groups coming in.”
She said prices are slashed for the citywide sale weekend.
“We just really want to get it out there to people who need it,” Pettenger said.
Parking for the former Sangamon School items is available on the west and north sides of the building, while the loading area for buyers is only through the doors on the south wing of the building. Hours for this sale are from 6 to 8 tonight, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday.
