MAHOMET -- Mahomet IGA owner Brooks Marsh presented Lori Martin of "Cakes by Lori at IGA" with the IGA Best Practices Award and the Progressive Grocer Outstanding Independent Award for bakeries on Wednesday.
Martin's baked goods earned the IGA award from among more than 6,000 stores, and she was surprised Wednesday with the second award from the national Progressive Grocers Association, which includes more than 10,000 store members, Marsh said.
"We're just so proud of what you bring to us, Lori," Marsh said, calling the Progressive Grocers honor in particular "a very exciting thing."
A professional baker for more than 30 years, Martin has worked under the "Cakes by Lori" brand at the Mahomet IGA for 1 1/2 years.
"I've just always been artsy," she says of her knack for creative cakes, which have included a Harry Potter-themed bride's cake that garnered international attention.
"Sometimes I just need to do something different," she said. .
