MAHOMET — The Village of Mahomet Board of Trustees is poised to add no-parking areas on Jones Court, located just off of East Oak Street (Illinois 150) on the north side of the McDonald’s restaurant near Green View.

In a study session Tuesday, an ordinance prohbiting street parking on some areas of Jones Court was advanced by board members to the consent agenda for their meeting coming up Aug. 27. The street ends in a cul-de-sac at Green View landscaping.

According to village board packet information, village staff has received complaints from businesses in that area relating to vehicles parking on both sides of Jones Court, plus parking that is too close to the intersection with Purnell Drive, which branches off of East Oak Street.

“Unrestricted parking in this area has created unsafe driving conditions for delivery vehicles and other vehicles trying to access Jones Court,” the study session packet of information stated.

An informal meeting between village staff and business owners on Jones Court was held to discuss traffic issues and impacts on the businesses related to the parking complaints. The recommendation to the board is to establish no-parking areas on the entire north side of Jones Court, the entire cul-de-sac and for about 30 feet from Purnell Drive on the south side of Jones Court to keep parking a safe distance from Purnell Drive.

Also at Tuesday’s meeting, amid discussion from the police department’s monthly report, trustee Andy Harpst noted a spike in calls for Mahomet officers. Police Chief Mike Metzger said there is no particular problem that led to this rise.

“We’re growing. We’re getting bigger. We’re getting busier,” Metzger said.

In upcoming meetings, it was noted Tuesday that the village board and the Mahomet-Seymour board of education will meet in joint session at 6 p.m. Sept. 4 at the training center for Cornbelt Fire Protection District downtown. Village and school officials have said they aim to meet jointly a couple of times of year to foster cooperation between the two units of government.
