CHAMPAIGN — Harold Farley, 90 of Champaign passed away at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 29, 2019, surrounded by his family at Carle Hospital, Urbana.
Harold was born Feb. 1, 1929 in Sadorus, Illinois. He was the son of Floyd and Grace Cramer Farley. He married Roberta Rayburn on June 3, 1951, at the First United Methodist Church in Champaign.
She survives him along with their four children: Marilyn (John) Litchfield and Art Farley both of Seymour, Illinois, Rita Farley Schiffbauer of Tonica, Illinois, and Sharon (Doug) Goff of Hopedale, Illinois. He was very fond of his seven grandchildren and great-granddaughter.
Harold was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Jean Meharry, and baby brother, Kent, as well as his dog, Monti.
Harold graduated from Sadorus High School in 1947. He attended Eastern Illinois University and served in the National Guard for three years. Harold farmed in the Seymour area all of his life with his son, son in law and grandson. He enjoyed leading the Scott 4-H Club for over 35 years.
He was a member of the Mahomet Seymour school board and Champaign County Farm Bureau and trustee of the Seymour Fire Department. He also served as the beef superintendent for the Champaign County Fair for 60 years. Harold was an active member of the Seymour United Methodist Church, holding various leadership positions.
Harold also volunteered as an usher at Illinois basketball games at the Assembly Hall. Attending athletic events, livestock shows, old country and Christian music shows, and mowing were activities he enjoyed. In addition, he was happy to share a bowl of his homemade ice cream with family and friends.
Harold looked forward to visiting with their many friends in Arizona for over 35 years during the winter months. He took great delight distributing oranges and grapefruit from their trees in Arizona, earning the nickname “Grapefruit guy” by the residents of Sunflower Resort.
Visitation was held at Morgan Funeral Home in Savoy from 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, June 2, 2019. Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Monday, June 3, 2019 at Morgan Funeral Home. Burial was at Roselawn Cemetery on Harold and Roberta’s 68th wedding anniversary.
Memorials can be given to Champaign County 4-H Foundation or the Seymour United Methodist Church, Seymour.
