CHAMPAIGN — Mahomet-Seymour junior Grant Coleman was named second-team All-Area by The News-Gazette. Coleman was one of three Bulldogs to be recognized for their performances on the hardwood. Senior Jordan Veldman and junior Cole Lener both were named honorable mention All-Area.
Coleman had a strong case for being named to the first-team. Coleman finished second in the area in scoring, as the bucket-getter averaged 20.6 points per game. Coleman drained 51 treys and shot over 76 percent from the free throw line. Coleman was named first-team All-Apollo Conference.
Veldman finished second on the team in scoring this season and shot over 40 percent from three-point range. Veldman was tough to stop when he put his head down to get to the rim. He finished with 59 attempts from the charity stripe, and the senior was the leader of the M-S defense all season.
Lener didn’t score a ton this season, averaging just over five points per game, but Lener filled the box score for head coach Ryan Bosch all season. Lener was second on the team in rebounding and led the Bulldogs with 55 offensive rebounds. Lener was second on the team in assists and steals.
With Lener and Coleman both returning next season, surrounded by a competent cast of contributors, M-S will have a chance to bounce back after winning just 12 games in 2018-19.
