CHAMPAIGN — The Mahomet-Seymour boys' swim team placed ninth out of 32 teams in the sectional meet at Centennial High School on Feb. 16 with a score of 51 points.
"That's a great finish considering they moved the Springfield teams into our Champaign sectional, which made the events a lot tougher," coach Dean Ekberg said. "Every MSHS swimmer got season-best times and swam way above my expectations."
No Bulldogs advanced to the state meet.
Champaign Central won the sectional meet with a total of 225 points, and Chatham Glenwood scored 210 for second.
Centennial took third (204.50 points), Springfield fourth (123), Urbana University High fifth (121), Rochester sixth (59) and Sullivan seventh (53).
Senior Dalton DeMay scored a total of 367.95 points for fifth place in the 1-meter dive.
Freshman Maximilian Katz totaled a 334.70 for sixth place on his 11 dives.
The two finished with a combined total of 19 points.
"Dalton's 367.95 score and Max's 334.70 score came pretty close to the 382.00 cutoff for state," Ekberg said. "That was phenomenal!"
Senior Gavin Groff swam the 500-yard freestyle in 5 minutes, 36.94 seconds for seventh place and took 10th in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:01.02.

Jennings also swam the 100 backstroke in 1:13.12 for 20th place, and junior Joey Wanninger placed 26th in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:26.95.
The Bulldogs' 200-yard freestyle relay team of Larson, DeMay, Whitehouse and Herriott placed seventh with a time of 1:40.67 for 14 points.
The 200-yard medley relay team of Whitehouse, Larson, Groff and DeMay earned a ninth-place finish with a time of 1:56.81 for eight points.
Despite no Mahomet-Seymour swimmers or divers advancing to this weekend's state tournament in Winnetka's New Trier High School, coach Ekberg couldn't be prouder of his hardworking Bulldog crew.
"Overall, a pretty darn good year for the swimming Bulldogs," Ekberg said.
