MAHOMET — The Mahomet-Seymour Junior High seventh-graders saw their terrific 2019-20 campaign fall just short of a regional title.
Danville North Ridge defeated the Bulldogs 44-32 in the regional title game last Wednesday. The clash was tied after three quarters, but M-S wasn’t able to counter Danville’s explosive offense.
Gavin Hammerschmidt poured in a team-high 11 points. Lucas Dyer chipped in 10 points, while Ray Long (six points) and Trey Peters (five points) were also rock-solid.
“So proud of these kids this season for all their accomplishments,” coach Jon Adkins said. “It is clear by the box scores that this is a talented group with multiple kids who can score.”
Adkins is right. It felt like the seventh-graders had a different leading scorer in each and every game. Dyer, Peters, Long and Hammerschmidt had great seasons. Mason Orton, Travis Hoffman, Reis Claybrook, Henry Wagner and Ethan Esker were all valuable pieces as well.
M-S finished with a 21-4 record and they’ll aim for another 20-win season as eighth-graders in 2021.
