MAHOMET — Better get off the tracks because the freight train is rolling. Mahomet-Seymour girls’ soccer continues to destroy every roadblock in its path, and just like that, the Bulldogs will have an opportunity to win a regional title with a victory over Champaign Centennial.
The Bulldogs finished up the regular season with an impressive record of 22-1. That was good enough to break the school’s single-season wins record, set by the 2018 club.
M-S built off that win total with a 9-0 dismantling of Danville in the Class 2A regional semifinals.
First-year coach Kelsie Briggs has done a terrific job pushing the right buttons, but having a great mix of veterans and explosive youngsters is a recipe for success. The Bulldogs have already broken the wins record. They stormed through the Apollo Conference. Up next is a chance for another regional title.
“They’re a fun team,” Briggs said. “They get the job done and they work hard while having fun. These girls can be laughing one second and right back to work. They’re some of the hardest working girls. I hope they can instill their work ethic to the underclassmen and they can kinda follow in their footsteps.”
M-S 7, Normal U-High 0. Cayla Koerner, Grace Lietz and Lauren Schnepper each scored two goals, and Koerner and Schnepper each dished out one assist as M-S cruised past Normal U-High last Thursday 7-0. Mackenzie Moore scored the first goal of the night for the Bulldogs. Nyah Biegler had two assists. Maddy Wade and Ainsley Jessup both had one dime. Grace Larson had five saves in goal to notch the shutout.
M-S 2, Morton 1. The Bulldogs concluded the regular season with coming from behind to defeat Morton 2-1. Morton scored the first goal of the game, but Biegler knotted it up at one apiece. Then, Brea Benson found Koerner for the go-ahead goal, and the M-S defense stayed strong. Grace Larson had three more saves as M-S improved to 22-1.
The junior varsity lost 3-2.
M-S 9, Danville 0. Brea Benson tallied a hat trick and one assist to help M-S stomp Danville 9-0 in the Class 2A Urbana Regional semifinals. Schnepper, Koerner and Lilia Isaac all scored two goals. Haley Lester notched two assists. Amelia Osman and Biegler both had assists too. Goalkeeper Grace Larson wasn’t tested all night.
M-S will play today against Centennial for the Class 2A regional championship. It’s scheduled for 5 p.m. at Urbana High School. M-S defeated Centennial 7-0 early in the season, but in the postseason, nothing is guaranteed.
